And then the entrepreneur starts doing all the things to run the business. This includes marketing, tech, keeping the books, administrative tasks, and more. And soon those details take them away from doing the things that actually make them money (and they naturally enjoy).

What is your job description?
Have you created a job description for yourself? Your job description should include job functions, expectations, and behaviors. As a business owner, your major functions should be centered upon two things – business strategy and your subject matter expertise.
As the business owner, you guide the business (strategy) and you perform the services as the subject matter expert. Other than that, lean on the following professionals to help make all the gears of your business run smoothly.
The Five Experts Every Small Business Owner Needs:
Just like a university employes adjunct professors, your business can contract with adjunct staff. You can call them at periodic times for advice or as the season (i.e., tax time) warrants. Or you can set up a retainer agreement where they perform ongoing functions on behalf of your business.
- CPA. An accountant or accounting firm can manage your monthly bookkeeping as well as file your quarterly and annual taxes. Alternatively, you can use bookkeeping software such as QuickBooks or FreshBooks then forward the details to your CPA.
- Coach. Whether you are working with a business coach, leadership coach, or a personal coach, you simply need the support and challenge coaching offers. Having a coach who understands you and your business will help you go further, faster. If you’re not growing, you’re dying – as an individual and as a business.
- Marketing Consultant. Even marketing experts need the help of a marketing expert. It’s easy to get stuck in the tactics of marketing and forget strategy. Conversely, it can be easy to think strategy but lack know-how (or time!) to execute. A fresh pair of eyes can help expand the business’s reach and customer conversion. This is such a crucial aspect of business success, and not be left to chance.
- Technical Expert. Where do you go when equipment fails? Who do you call when you to expand, upgrade, or streamline your technology? A hardware and software expert and/or web developer will be needed periodically. Always have someone who can advise, fix, and create in the tech space of your business.
- VA. Virtual Assistants run the gamut in their offerings. Think through what you need then set about finding someone who has experience performing the tasks you require. Some VA’s can create landing pages and can function as your technical expert, too. Other VA’s are skilled at social media and can function as part of your marketing team. All VA’s should be able to help you with administrative tasks.
Remain at the helm, business owner! And continue to perform in the area only you can do, your area of expertise. Focus on revenue so you can grow the business through reinvesting in the right areas.
